It was just about the only thing there was to find out about him, this Montgomery James, the partner assigned to seek out a few 'errands' with her that were in the league's best interest. "Other than to study abroad in Kanto, I never had much chance to travel. You miss it?"

[attr="class","monty"]Well, PETRA MONROE wasted no time in revealing she did some sort of research into him. Montgomery had to wonder how hard she dug and how little she found. After all, he had been determined to leave barely any trace of his former life behind.

"That's right. Driftveil, if you were curious," he offered, though he was certain she'd discovered that much as well.

Miss it though? Ha, well... "Not really. I left for a reason. Food was pretty damn good, though. What's about ya and Kanto, hmm?" he countered, raising an eyebrow as he peered at her from the corner of his eye.

The last time he'd been into the wilds, he'd gone into ultra sea with Navy. It had been his first encounter with such strange alternate realties and circumstances that he had wondered if his new boss was trying to test his guts and see if he would run with his tail between his legs. This time, he felt a bit more prepared.

Sorta.

The two approached the ferryman's river. Waiting for them was a ferry and it's owner: a GIMMIGHOUL. It gurgled at them, hungry for coins. "Waitin' for us to cough up some cash, huh? Greedy fucker..." Though he tossed the creature a coin for passage.

"...I see." Satisfied enough to allow this pseudo-interrogation to come to an end, Petra discards her doubts as she becomes absorbed with thoughts of life in Kanto. "I'd never go back, but it was nice while it lasted. Especially during the festival on Cinnabar Island." Likewise, the ranger scorned rocket for having ruined that for her.

By the time they arrive to the ferryman, Petra would also have mustered a coin from her pocket to offer. The little guy (gimmighoul) seemingly gripes at the man's remark of greed, causing a brief glimpse of a smile to her features while chuckling lightly. "What, you expect him to work for free? Guy's gotta make a living... Or an un-living, I guess."

Growing deadpan, as these attempts at humor always escaped her, Petra's eyes fix themselves back onto the map in order to provide the ferryman their destination. "Looks like we'll be there quicker than I imagined." Judging the time it took so far to reach the landmarks specified on her map, they might as well be there already.

Her only issue was knowing what this place was. She didn't want to jinx them by saying it aloud, but for a border between life and death... Where were all the ghosts and monsters Petra had been warned about? When they would finally step onto the south side of the river, it would be just as lifeless as the other side.

At this point she was beginning to worry if silence was the bad sign, but at least they could see the cliffside...

Montgomery crossed his arms as they began their ferry over the water. However, something felt strange to him. As the River Styx brought the souls of the dead to the underworld, this felt like he was leaving his current life to go somewhere he didn't belong.

Hell, none of these places were supposed to exist. He didn't know about them until Navy brought him to Ultra Sea.

The land on the other side approached. Soon, they docked the ferry, and Montgomery offered PETRA MONROE his hand to help her down to the shore. "Do you know which way?"

"They do." Having known the interests and antics of ghimmighoul, Petra does not see why their nature would change simply because of where they were. It was how the creatures thrived, and a small price to pay as opposed to risking the long way around. "Better to get what you pay for than take chances in this place." Getting a free pass in the realm of the dead sounded like something for those who already paid a different price.

Moving on in hopes to overlook the annoying, know-it-all vibe, Petra takes hold of Monty's hand. Once ashore, steel hues begin observing the ways forward. A sudden step plunges her into an emotional pit-trap. The rapid onset of FEAR causes her to shudder in place, gasping as if something had just snuck up and reached for her heart.

"I... I do now." Escalating palpatations and shaky breath are gradually brought to heel, internalizing it as one of the many tricks this place played on it's invaders. Who imposed this on them, she couldn't say. Simply being unwelcome wasn't enough, there had to be a reason why... Something worth having, or knowing.

"The map seems to label a seal on the cliffside as well." Gripping a pokeball in-hand, the device swiftly allows her Absol to walk among them. Navigating the cliff would be risky, making it's keen sense of imminent danger valuable. Leading the way, it would find the safest way to begin their climb up...

He wasn't sure he wanted to ask and find out.

"So, we go there first. Lead the way," he said, taking the rear since she had the map in hand. He'd let her navigate while he provided cover from behind.

Montgomery spared one last look at the GIMMIGHOUL before they faced the cliff face ahead. Climbing it would be no piece of CAKE. But, he did have a few ways to get around the ledge.

Releasing his ILLUMINA SKARMORY, she took flight, scouring for a decently safe path. She stopped not far away. "Pip's found somewhere safe to start. C'mon."

Wasting no time in finding a viable path, Petra gives a "Thanks.", nodding towards Monty and his Skarmory before leading them up to where she believed to have seen what they were looking for. It was both hidden and in plain sight thanks to the presence of fog, and vines that were either cut or parted. Eventually their feet, however sore from the trek, would get a moment to rest as they came to stand before the SOUTHERN SEAL.

"What is this..." Closer examination would reveal an abundance of tampering, though what remained of what appeared to be an esoteric 'offering' could be observed. Petra hesitated a moment before drawing closer, trying to get an idea of what it was.

The absol at her side tried to stop her, but the vines began to rattle against the cliffs in a howl of wind as soon as her fingertips graced it. For whatever reason, the mere touch had come to offend something greatly. "Spirits?!" She exclaims in question, knowing them to be something of a wildcard in this place. Some bordered along peaceful with need of their help, while others were vengeful in their pursuit of outsiders.

Being unwelcome wasn't anything new to her, but this was.

As Petra turns to face the strong winds pouring down over them, her guess is both right and wrong. "Oh, what the hell!?" Incorporeal flames of MOLTRES' SPIRIT cast brilliant hues down at the cliffside, regarding them with fervent hostility for trespassing.

Having been able to detect this before it happened, the absol jumps ahead of them both—Taking the spirit's flames head on to allow the two trainers a fighting chance...

The wind blew so hard, it nearly knocked him off the mountain. Thanks to Pipsqueak's metal claws grasping at his jacket, he managed to grab at the vines and pull himself upright again.

"The fuck is that-"

Spirits? Did she just say- "Ya gotta be kiddin' me!"

He knew better than to doubt their existence, especially in a place like this. Navy had shown him how strange the wilds were, breathing under water and coming close to creatures made of bulletproof glass.

Still, it was something shocking when a crimson flame flew by them.

Thankfully, her Pokemon was more prepared, taking the hit straight on. "Pip, help 'er out!"

The SKARMORY ILLUMINATED the area, coming to strike at the spirit with an ATTACK OF HER WING.

despite their evident trespass, such hostility feels overbearing in the midst of watching her pokemon burn just before the blinding ILLUMINATION. regardless, it bides ample time for petra to react.

"i wish!" is petra's response as her hands quickly exchange one pokemon for another, the spawned hisuian typhlosion raising it's eyes to meet the spirit's with equivalent disdain. capitalizing on it's blind state, wisps rise from the pokemon's blazing hood to form an INFERNAL PARADE.

like disembodied taunts, their dance-esque routine leads to climactic catastrophe. the vestige's feathers would begin to smolder as they permeate it's spectral form, weakening the avian and grounding it before them. "but we're finishing what it started!"

regardless of scarce contests in battle, petra believed this the only way. preexisting notions of legendary pokemon being a positive factor, or at least maintaining some sense of balance in the world has become clouded. they have razed too much. sided with the worst lot.
